Now I need to make a bunch of syringes

friend do i have some good news for you.

Warning though - the colored water in those things tends to dry up after…maybe a year? That little black rubber seal doesn’t do that great a job, and you can’t refill it without breaking it. (If they’re not already broken on arrival…) They’ll still write, since the actual ink doesn’t evaporate as quickly, but they just don’t look as cool:

Just so you know.
P.S. you can buy actual syringes through Amazon as well. Not necessarily with needles attached. Probably for cheaper.

X Japan / Otakon 2014

(See more concert photos with commentary here.)

This hasn’t come up on my blog before, so let me say now that X Japan is my favorite band of all time.

I was super stoked to hear that they’ll be playing in the Madison Square Garden in NYC this year (on my birthday! Best birthday present!). This will finally be that MSG concert I was waiting for, which was cancelled (postponed indefinitely) 6 years ago, and I wasn’t sure I’d ever get to see the band play live.

But on top of that, as Otakon 2014 drew near, they announced Yoshiki would be playing a concert from his classical tour at the con this year. Otakon held a drawing for concert passes as well as the even more exclusive photo op (in place of autographs, to save Yoshiki’s wrist).

I totally lucked out! I’m in the X shirt next to Heath in the group shot. As we were leaving, I said, “I’ll see you in October! (The concert’s on my birthday!)” and Yoshiki replied with, “Really? Happy birthday!” and shook my hand. Pretty awesome shaking hands with Asia’s biggest rock icon!

I’m so happy!

I made a bonesaw!

Fittingly, I cut all of it out with handsaws. Probably 90% power-tool-free, done with my own (lack of) muscles. About 2 weeks start to finish (while also doing some other things). Blade is polycarbonate plastic, blade spine is oak, handle is poplar. Screws are all fake (carved wood). The blade slots into the wood pieces, which slot into each other with some glue.

P.S. I fudged the proportions a little to make the handle a little less huge on my hand.

Thanks everyone for coming! Friday’s shoot was a good time. I enjoyed playing Cards Against Humanity with those of you who stayed after the shoot. Saturday’s broken glass incident and general lateness were unfortunate, but, eh, things happen. Props to the TF2ers who hung in there.
Thanks to Lithe-Fider and Vihtalaini for taking charge during the shoots! I was feeling like a deer in the headlights. And thanks to Otakon staff for securing our space and watching out for us.
I will be trying to get some photos as well as our custom CAH set tidied and uploaded for at least one of the people who requested it. Bear with me a bit here because I just got my computer back from repairs and I’m under the weather now. (It’s actually not con crud - I caught it from my mom who was sick for a while before the con. I just hope I wasn’t spreading germs to people there before I realized I was getting sick D:)
If you took or found photos of our group, definitely send them my way! Feel free to just dump links in my submit box or on our cosplay.com thread. Much appreciated :)

Link to info about the Valve games cosplay meetups at Otakon for anyone who hasn’t found it yet! Posting this so hopefully people in the tags can see it.

Fans of all Valve games are invited (Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead, Portal, Half-Life, Dota 2). Shoots are from 7-9 PM on Friday on the 4th floor and from 9-11 PM on Saturday at the indoor fountains. See link above for more info. RSVP here.

I printed custom Cards Against Humanity! I look forward to trying these out after our shoot(s) at Otakon :)
I say “shoot(s)” because Saturday’s shoot runs till 11PM, so I dunno if people would want to stay much later. Friday (after ending at 9PM) is more like it.
I want to tentatively say we’d like to move to some out-of-the-way corner of the 4th floor (maybe on the East side?) for our informal post-shoot hangouts, though this might change depending on crowds. For Location Plan B, I’m thinking maybe the area with chairs in the general Starbucks or behind-Starbucks area. I’d like to send someone to scout out the area as our shoots come to a close to see where we should go based on how things look at that time.

RSVP to our shoot here! (It’s super helpful. You can change it later by saving the link it gives you at the end, so RSVP as soon as you can!)
News:
Otakon’s Cosplay Coordination (OCC) department would like to see more responses in our Cosplay.com thread to show there is interest. They are concerned because there were more replies last year, and almost none yet this year besides mine. Please reply to our thread if you’re interested in this shoot! (Even if you already completed an RSVP form. Both are important now. Thank you!) See update below
I am currently talking with OCC about a shoot conflict. If this affects our shoots, I will let you know when I can. Please stay tuned.
See my #Otakon 2014 photoshoot info tag for previously-posted info about these shoots.

News update
Everything in the previous post has been worked out!
The cosplay.com thread in particular isn’t actually a huge deal to staff since we have activity elsewhere. I was mistaken. (But it is still a nice place to go for discussion! Definitely RSVP though!)
The shoot conflict has been solved and will not affect our shoots.
We are now tossing around ideas for post-shoot hangout fun! Stay tuned!

So has anybody determined the probability of Tumblr asks being eaten?

I mean the site users are certainly well aware that sending an ask on Tumblr does not guarantee that the intended recipient will get it, bit what’s the number for that? 1 in 100? 1 in 1000?

Maybe if we had a number, we could spread that info around so Tumblr might actually address it maybe.

Just sayin’.

(reblogging because I have more to add to my reply)

I got 4 of my asks (with no ellipses) confirmed eaten within the same couple days recently. I can send you the messages for science.

Also, Tumblr user thorhugs said they contacted staff, and staff was aware of the ellipsis problem and isn’t saying/doing anything about it.

I’ve also heard from a different Tumblr user that Tumblr silently filters and deletes asks it thinks might be spam (sneaky links or whatever), so that might be a factor too. It would be nicer to have a spam folder than have them disappear into the void…

One last thing I thought at first might be a factor is that I heard Tumblr staff “shadowbans” people (or at least cuts them off from public speech) they’ve gotten too many complaints from - but those people are blocked from typing in the askbox in the first place, so that’s no ask-eating mystery there.
