Otakon 2014, Friday, ValvE Photoshoot
I will not tag photoshoots. Too many people. I mihgt take if only one or two people are in a shot but fuck no on group shoots.
Some people I know off the top of my head:
TF2 photoshoot - Blu Team part 1
The Scouts were being such wonderful influences by introducing Archimedes to the wonders of deep-fried cannibalism!
There is an awful lot of awful science going on in these pictures and I approve.
Now I need to make a bunch of syringes
Warning though - the colored water in those things tends to dry up after…maybe a year? That little black rubber seal doesn’t do that great a job, and you can’t refill it without breaking it. (If they’re not already broken on arrival…) They’ll still write, since the actual ink doesn’t evaporate as quickly, but they just don’t look as cool:
Just so you know.
P.S. you can buy actual syringes through Amazon as well. Not necessarily with needles attached. Probably for cheaper.
X Japan / Otakon 2014
(See more concert photos with commentary here.)
This hasn’t come up on my blog before, so let me say now that X Japan is my favorite band of all time.
I was super stoked to hear that they’ll be playing in the Madison Square Garden in NYC this year (on my birthday! Best birthday present!). This will finally be that MSG concert I was waiting for, which was cancelled (postponed indefinitely) 6 years ago, and I wasn’t sure I’d ever get to see the band play live.
But on top of that, as Otakon 2014 drew near, they announced Yoshiki would be playing a concert from his classical tour at the con this year. Otakon held a drawing for concert passes as well as the even more exclusive photo op (in place of autographs, to save Yoshiki’s wrist).
I totally lucked out! I’m in the X shirt next to Heath in the group shot. As we were leaving, I said, “I’ll see you in October! (The concert’s on my birthday!)” and Yoshiki replied with, “Really? Happy birthday!” and shook my hand. Pretty awesome shaking hands with Asia’s biggest rock icon!
I’m so happy!
Partners in malpractice!

Medic (TF2): Me (cartoonmaster)
Photographer: Not sure - I asked someone taking our pic to snap one with my camera too.
(See my Ota’14 hall photos here for a couple other takes)
I made a bonesaw!
Fittingly, I cut all of it out with handsaws. Probably 90% power-tool-free, done with my own (lack of) muscles. About 2 weeks start to finish (while also doing some other things). Blade is polycarbonate plastic, blade spine is oak, handle is poplar. Screws are all fake (carved wood). The blade slots into the wood pieces, which slot into each other with some glue.
P.S. I fudged the proportions a little to make the handle a little less huge on my hand.
See my progress photos here.
